melancholia of the mind
Published as a poetry/photography hybrid, the book gives a narrative of being consumed into the depths depression and emerging to tread water on the other side. I created this series as a response to a recent hospitalization.
The poem follows the shame and isolation of feeling different, specifically in relation to the queer community. It tells the story of someone who lost themselves into the waves of darkness and nearly drowned.
Black and white, the images deny the viewer color- just as the world appears to those in depressive or panic episodes. They show the fragmented world of unceasing sorrow.
Together the words and photographs tell a story about irony, writers, grief, and at last- recovery.
